When browsing without cookies, I can browse everywhere fine except for when I click on a in-site link. (i.e. browsing around area51.phpbb.com and while viewing one topic, I click a user posted link to another topic, I get logged out)

This happens with every posted link which gets parsed through BBcode.
I'm thinking we may need to use append_sid for the url bbcode when it's an in-site link unless there is another way to recover the session.
