We noticed this in one of my extensions and confirmed by phpBB com.

If you follow any of your notifications (also old ones) - (quoted, reply to, etc..) you are not visible on the bottom of the viewforum's online user list. If you post then your are listed as usual.

Not tested on 3.1.10.
