When registered users who are not computer savvy come to the index page of a phpbb forum, are not logged in and have forgotten their passwords, they usually don't know what to do since they are not used to clicking the 'login' link to find the 'I forgot my password' link. As a result, admins get a lot of unnecessary emails from users asking what their password is. A long time ago I added an 'I forgot my password' link (the same one that appears on the regular login page) to the index page for registered users who are not logged in (right below the username and password blanks) and I found that almost completely eliminated the problem. I think that should be the way a default phpbb3 installation works, so I suggest adding that link on the index page for users who are not logged in.
