Expand test coverage for template engine - add tests for invalid constructs

When implementing template events the question was raised how the template engine currently handles various error scenarios.

The best way of determining this, of course, is to write tests for said scenarios.

I'm going to target 3.1, if the tests are backportable they could be backported to 3.0 later.
